Lough Nahooin Monster

Written by theunexplained.org

Seven members of an Irish family, who lived among the lakes and peat bogs of Connemara in west Ireland, watched a large beast disport itself in Lough Nahooin from sunset until dark on the evening of February 22, 1968. Farmer Stephen Coyne, accompanied by one of his sons and the family dog, had gone down to a bog near the lough early that evening to get some dry peat when he noticed something black in the water.

As he and the boy stared at it, they saw that it was an animal, but an altogether strange kind of creature. It had a polelike neck and head close to a foot in diameter, a flat tail, and a slick skin. It was swimming about aimlessly, turning from one direction to another, when the dog started barking excitedly.

Attracted by the yapping, the creature glided toward the shore and opened its mouth in an intimidating manner; but when Coyne reached for his dog, the thing swerved off and continued swimming about in a desultory way. Coyne went on watching while the boy ran home to get his mother.

Mrs. Coyne and the rest of the small Coynes hastened to the lough to see the extraordinary sight. As the creature ducked and reared, the family saw that it was about 12 feet long, had two humps on its back and hornlike protuberances on its head, but had no eyes. Once the creature's tail flipped up close to the head, so that the body formed an almost complete loop or circle. Clearly, it was not only long but very flexible.

All seven Coynes watched until the daylight faded, then went home with a great deal to talk about. (Janet and Colin Bord, Alien Animals , pp.3-6)
