During Christmas in 1980, two NATO airbases in Rendlesham Forest, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, were plagued by strange lights and the landing of an unknown object. The events began on December 26th.
Civilian witnesses described silent dome-shaped lights hovering above and then drifting away. At l am a radar station near Norwich tracked an unidentified object the size of a Boeing 737, which then disappeared off the screen over Rendlesham Forest.
One hour later, two American security guards reported observing a strange light in the trees. They found a clearing where the canopy of trees had been smashed, and on the ground below they came across a cone-shaped object standing on tripod legs. When one of the men drew near, the craft rose from the ground and moved away from the trees.
Later that night, lights were spotted again, and four men approached an object shrouded in mist, which flew away. The men withdrew and waited for base commander Lieutenant Colonel Halt together with reinforcements.
Just after midnight, a convoy of trucks arrived with powerful searchlights, but when they tried to use I them the lights failed to respond. Measurements, bark samples and radiation readings were taken at the original crash site. Another team observed a mist with lights in it, and then Halt himself observed two lights fly overhead.
Colonel Halt and other military personnel have since made public statements to confirm the validity of these events, however skeptics believe they were only seeing lights from Orford Ness lighthouse.
