1961: Lawrence Tacker Denounces UFO Sightings in Argosy

Written by theunexplained.org

In March Colonel Lawrence Tacker launched an extraordinary public attack on NICAP's cover-up allegations in Argosy magazine, calling their protests 'drivel'. Never before had the Air Force got so angry about UFOs. Tacker also wrote a book defending the USAF position.

Despite this being another year of low activity, one of the most important cases in UFO history was to occur. Its importance went unseen by everyone -including its witnesses - at the time. Indeed, this was happening within the UFO mystery itself. The best cases had not gone away. They were just occurring in a more subtle form.

Betty and Barney Hill were returning to their home in Portsmouth after a vacation in Canada. Late on the night of September 19th they observed a light as they drove through the lonely White Mountains of New Hampshire. They stopped to observe it with binoculars and noted that it was crescent or banana-shaped. Barney also reported several 'men' visible through windows in the side of the craft. They then found themselves further down the road without recalling how they had got there. Upon arrival home the journey seemed to have taken longer than it should have done.

The matter was reported to a local UFO group and investigated as routine. It was a modest entity encounter, worth logging, but not sensational enough to make the media. Skeptics said the UFO was Jupiter - which was bright in the sky at the time. Records from the air base that covered the White Mountains suggested they had an anomalous target on radar.

But the innocent nature of this case was a facade. For the next few months Betty and Barney had nightmare images of cat-like eyes and strange alien faces. They became tense and terrified and had to seek medical help. Sent from doctor to doctor over the next couple of years, the terrifying reality of their case ticked away in their heads like a time bomb waiting to explode.
