The Spirit in the Corner Room

Written by Margerie Roper

I have worked in many offices after graduating from college. The office buildings, which I have been in as an employee, have ranged from some that were newly structured to those that has withstood the tests of time. It is common to hear ghost stories involving these buildings. Most of these are purely hearsay and rarely can you find a person that actually attests to having a ghost encounter, friendly or not.

Two years ago, I was connected with a government office. Our department was housed in an old building that has been continually renovated in order that it will look modern and updated. Our unit is located at a corner of the building so that we have a view of the other surrounding buildings and structures.

My work was as an executive assistant, which means I have only a superior who gives me my tasks. I perform specific research works and studies that my boss uses for reference and review. My table is located strategically outside the room of my superior so that assignments could be handed to me without walking long distance to and from his table.

My boss normally stays cooped up in his room as he has lots of paper work that need to be attended to. One day, he was out on a meeting for the whole day so I expected some peace and quite in the office. He kept his door closed but not locked in case I need to submit something to him.

As I was enjoying the bliss of being alone and doing my work unsupervised, I heard some noises coming from his office. I stopped what I was doing and listened intently to make sure that the sound was coming from his room. I distinctly heard movements inside with papers rustling and someone walking or dragging something. I could even hear the blinds moving so I was asking myself if my boss left a window open. I was positive that there was no one there so why was it that I was hearing noises inside, I asked myself. It never crossed my mind at the time that maybe something not human was responsible for all those sounds.

After being convinced that someone was indeed moving inside the office, I went to the room. As I expected, there was nobody around. My superior's office is somewhat huge since he is a high-ranking government official. I checked each and every nook and found nothing. I looked at all the windows and they were all closed. Some papers were on the floor although I have no idea what would make them fall from his table. There was no breeze of any kind and I do know that our building is pest-free. However, I did feel a little odd while I was arranging the papers on my boss' table, as if someone was watching me.

When I related this incident to some of my officemates during lunch, they told me that our building has several friendly ghosts inhabiting it. Former and existing employees have their own personal encounters with some of these ghosts. I guess I was fortunate that mine was a mild experience as opposed to others whose stories are scarier and hair-raising.
