For my college degree, I studied in one of the oldest school in our country. It is a sprawling campus located in one of the major cities. The picture of towering office and commercial buildings, fast food restaurants and polluting smoke from the public utility vehicles soon disappear once you enter the university grounds. In their places would be huge, great trees and tall college buildings surrounding the academic oval. Soon, you will find yourself in the center of learning and this is exciting for someone like me who loves the academe.
As part of my study habits, I rarely buy college textbooks and instead discipline myself to go the main library to study. This strategy has worked effectively for me and soon I was one of those students who spend their extra time inside the library surrounded by millions of books on different subject matters. I find it relaxing and conducive to do my lessons while I enjoy the peace and solitude of studying alone.
During examination months, the time I spent in the library was twice than the usual hours. There were days when I go home only when the library is about to close and I had no option but to leave. Other students like me were likewise cramming for their exams hence I was not afraid to stay there until the evening.
I remember clearly one day when I was so focused as I was preparing for an upcoming exam. It was raining hard and I was bothered at the thought that the lights would go out or I would have difficulty in going home later. I would look up occasionally to make sure that there were other students around, a sign if I should leave or not. As the day moved on to night time, the number of people in the library dwindled. The last time I looked up it was only me and another student a few desks away from me that was busy studying. There was nothing unusual about the other person since he looked like a fellow student. His head was bowed down, apparently very serious in whatever it was he was reading at that time.
Finally, the time for me to go home came for I was afraid that the personnel in charge of the library would leave us behind. At that time, my co-student remained on his seat. As I checked out the book I was reading, the guard prepared to close the door. I told him that another student was still inside that room. He told me that there was no one else inside and that I was the last student to leave. I argued with him but he insisted that there was no one left inside. Actually, he and the librarian were just waiting for me, as they wanted to go home immediately.
As I walked towards the terminal where I will get a ride home, I felt goose bumps all over my body. I could not believe that the student who I apparently saw was a ghost. It was a good thing I did not approach him when I left for I was afraid to think what could have happened next.
